Mark Hughes says his priority is to make sure Queens Park Rangers avoid relegation this season after taking over as manager.


Mark Hughes' last job was in charge of Fulham.
The R's have moved fast to replace Neil Warnock, who was given the boot on Sunday night after an awful run of form which had seen the club slip to within a point and a place of the relegation zone.


As soon as Warnock was gone Hughes was made the favourite to take over at Loftus Road.


The Welshmen has now signed a two-and-a-half year contract and his fast task will be to mastermind a victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.

QPR owner Tony Fernandes is expected to give Hughes a huge transfer kitty in a bid to keep the club in the Premier League.


The former Fulham and Manchester City boss will be expected to hit the ground running and will already be looking at potential new signings.


The 48-year-old says he excited about what the future might bring for QPR but for now is focused on making sure they avoid relegation.


"I'm fully aware of the challenge in the short and long term and I am genuinely excited about the ambition of the owners," said Hughes.
"The immediate priority is to consolidate our place in the Premier League. The future is very bright."


QPR are 2.87 to go down this season after failing to pick up a win since a 3-2 victory over Stoke on November 19.
The R's are 5.00 to end their winless streak at Newcastle this weekend, with the Toon 1.72 and the draw 3.60.

Point guard Cedric Jackson has said that he will soon reach his triple-double milestone that has been eluding him for quite some time now.


On several occasions this seasons, Jackson has missed out on a chance to reach double figures in three statistical categories.


In the New Zealand Breakers' 90-79 defeat of Melbourne last weekend, he had 11 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, which means that one more board could have made him the first Breakers players ever to reach the personal landmark.
The American said that he didn't realise that he was so close to a triple-double otherwise he would have tried harder to get that extra rebound.

"But I'm glad we got the win though. It gets to me every now and then, but I'm pretty sure I'll get it soon," Jackson said.
He has four triple-doubles under his belt but all of them were recorded in the US, where a basketball game is 48-minute long instead of the ANBL games that are of 40 minutes only.


"It's tough because I'm so used to playing 48 minutes. But it's still achievable and it would be a pretty great accomplishment," he added.


But achieving personal accolades aren't Jackson's motives when he is on the field as he believes playing for individual records has the potential of ruining the team play.

Gordon Elliott has warned punters ante-post Champion Bumper favourite Don Cossack is "very doubtful" to make the journey to the Cheltenham Festival.


Since finishing fifth on his debut last spring, the five-year-old has turned in two impressive performances, winning by 18 lengths at Naas before landing a Grade Two prize at Navan.


Both Stan James and bet365 have the gelding at the head of their Cheltenham market, but Elliott does not believe it is the right way to go with his exciting youngster.


"He's fine, but I'd say it's very doubtful he'll go to Cheltenham. He's done very well to win his two races this season, but he's a nice horse with a big future and he'll either have just one more run this season or he won't run at all," said Elliott.


One Elliott inmate who is likely to cross the Irish Sea to line up at Prestbury Park in March is novice hurdler Mount Benbulben.


After winning in impressive fashion twice, the gelding suffered an odds-on reverse in Grade One company last time, but his trainer feels there were genuine excuses.


"We found he had a few back problems after his last run and he came back very stiff, but he's fine now," Elliott added.


"He could go straight to Cheltenham for the Albert Bartlett without having another run."
