More Women are Enjoying Online Gaming than Ever Before, says Belle Rock Entertainment

PRESS RELEASE

More Women are Enjoying Online Gaming than Ever Before, says Belle Rock Entertainment
2/24/2012

The internet has helped to open up the world of casino gaming to more women than ever before, says Bellerock Entertainment.

LONDON, Feb 24, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Bellerock Entertainment online casino review site reports that four times as many women played casino games in the UK in 2010 than in 2007. In addition, the number of women playing online casino games is now almost as high as men.

Although traditionally seen as a male pursuit, almost half of all UK online casino players are female. 48.38% of players in 2011 were female, compared to a slightly higher 51.62% being male, according to a survey carried out by Hitwise.

The internet has played a major part in increasing the number of female casino game players. Online casinos not only provide more convenient access to women who wish to play casino games, they also provide a playing atmosphere that women feel safer in. An increase in the number of female-oriented online casino and bingo sites has helped draw more women into the sector. The latest British Gambling Preference Survey figures indicate that while the number of women playing online casino games has increased, men tend to vary their gaming activities more than women. While men were found to strongly prefer poker, roulette and sports betting, women still strongly prefer online slots and bingo, with women twice as likely to play bingo as men.

The news comes alongside findings published by Women at NBCU, reporting that women are increasingly more tech-savvy than men. Their study announced that 54% of women in the US own a smartphone, compared to just 46% of men, and that women are more likely to own a smartphone app and Nintendo Wii too. Melissa Lavigne-Delville, of Women at NBCU, explains:

"Three-quarters of the female population is online and their increasingly passionate and widespread consumption of digital is shaping this ever-evolving space.

"As this growing number of digitally-dependent women alters the landscape in unexpected ways, marketers need to react in real-time."

With casino gaming being traditionally viewed as a male-oriented pastime, these latest figures indicate that a change in attitudes may be called for. Online casino sites that continue to market themselves strictly towards men are set to miss out on the valuable 50% female share of this emerging market.

UK is the loser in betting exodus Offshore gambling operations are estimated to cost the Government £300m a year in tax revenue

UK is the loser in betting exodus
Offshore gambling operations are estimated to cost the Government £300m a year in tax revenue
JAMES MOORE
2/21/2012
Independent

The last major gambling company with an onshore sportsbook is set to quit Britain if the Government fails to equalise the tax paid by offshore operations with what UK firms pay. Gala Coral's group chief executive Carl Leaver says this would be "sad", but warns that onshore betting taxes are crippling his business against rivals.

The location of the group's online sportsbook is now under "constant review". Industry figures suggest that the Government is losing £300m a year as a result of the gambling industry's internet and telephone operations moving offshore. Coral and Bet365 are the only two major firms left in the UK.

Tory MP Matt Hancock, whose Suffolk constituency includes Newmarket, horseracing's HQ, thinks he has the solution. He has tabled a Bill which would change the way the tax works by charging it on the punter's location rather than the bookie's.

This would be achieved by making it illegal for a company to accept bets from UK citizens without paying the tax and holding a licence from the Gambling Commission. For the sake of some of his important constituents, Mr Hancock also wants the levy on bookmakers racing profits – which funds the sport – to be treated similarly.

Just as Government revenues from the tax have been tumbling, so has the levy, and horseracing is in the midst of a funding crisis as a result.

Mr Hancock's Bill has its second reading on 30 March, although as a "10-minute rule bill" it faces an uphill struggle for Parliamentary time.

"The Bill (would) bring the main offshore gambling platforms onshore by making it illegal for them to accept bets without paying tax and levy. It will be classified as a bet in the UK if that is where the punter is," he says.

Some betting companies might chose not to comply. But, says Mr Hancock: "They would be illegal. Of course you have to make enforcement effective, ban their ads, and their executives wouldn't be able to come to the UK without facing sanction."

A spokesman for the Department for Culture Media & Sport says the Government supports the intention to regulate remote gambling on a "point of consumption basis" and is "committed to bringing forward a Government Bill as soon as Parliamentary time allows".

But that won't be this year – or next year. However, if Mr Hancock's Bill passes its second reading and reaches committee stage the ministry says it will be supported "albeit with a few technical amendments".

Mr Leaver would be relieved at that prospect, because for his company, time is running out: "Right now there is no competitive advantage to being onshore other than, perhaps, securing a better relationship with racing and even that is debatable."

He is also annoyed that betting shops "which create jobs in the UK and pay rent on the high street" are crippled by taxes which "remote" rivals don't face.

"That seems a topsy turvy situation because offshore creates no employment. We want to see all offshore gaming taxed in the same way and at the same level as onshore. If not, then there is no way we could continue to see ourselves disadvantaged in this way."

Those bookmakers that have moved offshore are wary. Ciaran O'Brien, corporate affairs director at Ladbrokes, says: "We pay more tax than we retain in profit. The Association of British Bookmakers' figure for the industry shows that it paid £1bn in tax and yet retained just £600m in profit. We are working harder for the Government than we are for ourselves.

"Let's say you set a very high tax rate. How would you enforce it? There will be a lot of people outside the net. The experience of the Government here when they extended the gross profits tax at 15 per cent (in 2005) was the death knell for any operators onshore."

On the issue of enforcement, Mr O'Brien argues that even when advertising gambling was banned under the old Gaming Board, ads still appeared for offshore online casinos on the tube.

He adds: "We would welcome a full, proper review. The sensible option would be a low rate (for remote gaming) to bring everyone in, at point of consumption. The other option would be a rate of say 10 per cent for all betting."

Mr Leaver would agree with the latter: "We would like to see some of the money that the Government recovers (from offshore gambling) invested in easing the burden on outlets like betting shops and bingo halls which create jobs."

Interestingly, at least one offshore operation is now looking to move onshore. Bodog, based in sunny Antigua, is about to relocate here.

Its UK chief executive, Patrick Selin, says: "All over Europe you are seeing a trend to make taxes on gambling higher. Different countries are doing different things to enforce this. Some are trying to get ISPs (internet service providers) to block gaming, others to get the banks to stop dealing with betting sites.

"The UK has the best tax. The lowest of all in Europe. There are benefits from being onshore too. You are more credible and there are more marketing tools, deals with newspapers, football clubs. It is also easier to employ talent."

As for horseracing, it should be cheering from the sidelines. But maybe not.

Will Lambe spokesman for the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) says there is a problem: making the levy part of a "point of sale" gambling tax could violate EU rules on state aid for industry.

"Certainly it is clear that the regulatory system for remote betting platforms isn't working... but there are state aid concerns if you bring in secondary licencing (along with a new tax)."

William Hill, the largest levy payer in the UK, agrees: "There are state aid issues in extending the current levy scheme to offshore operators through any mechanism. Levy would not necessarily follow regulation or tax."

And as for that tax? "There is now a significant body of evidence... which shows that a controlled closing of the UK market at a double-figure tax rate with weak enforcement will be bad for customers, bad for competition and would produce limited tax yield."

Both the BHA and the bookies say they support replacing the levy with a commercial deal. Ministers have been pushing for this too, although they inevitably end up with refereeing a new levy (which is statutory) each year.

The BHA now wants bookies to pay for a "right to bet" on horseracing: "We need to capture all betting on racing, no matter what the platform is. We need a level playing field," says Mr Lambe.

Bellagio Hotel hits the jackpot in the Las Vegas

Bellagio hits the jackpot in the Las Vegas
By Beth Duffell
February 10, 2012
gethampshire

‘BRIGHT light city gonna set my soul, gonna set my soul on fire’ – that was the view of the King of rock ‘n’ roll Elvis Presley about Las Vegas. And set your soul on fire it certainly does.

http://winsgame.com

http://easss.com/travel/hotel

Las Vegas is a place where dreams really can come true. Let yourself go as you party through the night, gamble to your heart’s content and your wallet is empty, and eat at the hotel buffets until completely stuffed.

If you are visiting the city and planning to make the most of the 24-hour fun, then staying somewhere with style is a must.

When looking at the variety of hotels in the gambling capital of the world, it is hard to choose because there is so much on offer.

Do you want to surround yourself in Egypt’s ancient history at the pyramid-shaped Luxor or take a trip to France and stay in Paris, with its own replica Eiffel Tower, where you can take a lift to the top to view the world famous ‘strip’ in all its glory? Or is the Big Apple more up your street at New York, New York, which boasts its own rollercoaster that speeds across its frontage?

For true luxury, Bellagio is the hotel for you. Where else can you dine surrounded by priceless Picassos or watch water fountains dance across an eight-acre lake to well-known tunes?

Bellagio is in the middle of the strip and if you want luxury, then you will get it here.

Arriving at the AAA five diamond award-winning hotel we were immediately welcomed to all its splendour. The porter grabbed our bags as our car was valet parked and was really friendly, recommending all the best places to see during our stay.

Entering the hotel lobby, glass sculptor Dale Chihuly’s Fiori di Como chandelier adorns the ceiling. It is a bright rainbow of 2,000 hand-blown glass blossoms – a very impressive piece of art.

Opening the door to our resort deluxe king room with an indigo theme, the view was the first thing we noticed. Before us was a panoramic picture looking straight onto the strip, the dancing fountains and all the bright neon lights that the city is so famous for. Just perfect.

And a night at Bellagio makes sure your stay is a memorable one. From a 40-inch flat screen television to an iPod docking station, a mini-bar packed with drinks and sweet and savoury snacks, you have everything you need as you get ready for a night on the town.

And with LED lighting for greater energy efficiency, organic carpeting and furnishings made from eucalyptus, sustainability is also high on Bellagio’s list of environmental priorities – a plus for any visitor concerned about the world around us.

Make sure you treat yourself at one of Bellagio’s fine dining restaurants. For a chance to see works of art while savouring edible masterpieces created by chef Julian Serrano and his team, the Picasso restaurant is where we dined during our stay.

When you arrive at the hotel make sure one of the first things you do is make a reservation here. Set on the lakeside of the fountains, with outside seating available, it is a really beautiful setting.

Influenced by regional dishes from France and Spain, where Pablo Picasso resided during the majority of his life, diners have the chance to indulge in an exquisite array of dishes.

There is no denying you will still be thinking about the food long after your stay, so it is no surprise to hear Serrano has been awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award – the most coveted designation in hospitality in north America – a mighty 11 times.

And with a wine cellar stocked with more than 1,500 wines from a wealth of European vineyards, if you are stuck for choice then you can ask for the help of one of three master sommeliers.

We chose the menu degustation, starting with a Maine lobster salad accompanied by an apple Champagne vinaigrette, followed by pan seared scallops with a potato mousseline and jus de veau.

The next course was a sautéed steak of ‘a’ foie gras accompanied by a roasted peach-thyme pound cake, almonds and Riesling peach coulis. Roasted tournedo loin of Colorado lamb with pisto, mint aioli and tempura zucchini flower was next on the menu. Lamb is probably my favourite meat and this was just delectable.

And the desserts were like pieces of artwork themselves – a perfect end to a brilliant meal.

The staff were amazing and we could not have asked for better service. Master sommelier Robert Smith offered wine pairings with the dishes while captain Michael Sloan was very attentive.

Even though your stay in Vegas will be busy as you take in all the sights and sounds, make sure you grab some relaxing poolside time too. Surrounded by comfy loungers, Bellagio’s pools offer a chance to refresh yourself after a hot day’s shopping or some chill out time the morning after a big night in the casinos. Private cabanas are available along with poolside massages too.

And for art enthusiasts who fancy seeing even more masterpieces, the hotel even has its own Gallery of Fine Art.

So if Las Vegas is next on your travel list, make sure you book your room at Bellagio. You will be amazed at all it has to offer.

To enjoy Las Vegas you have to be ready for anything and keep on your toes. It is such a busy place and there is so much going on at every twist and turn, you don’t want to miss any of it.

So during your stay make sure you buy a Las Vegas Monorail pass. The seven-stop monorail system glides its passengers along a 3.9-mile route. Connecting its passengers to the hotels and casinos, restaurants and entertainment venues, it is the perfect choice for those who want to avoid the busy city streets.

In 15 minutes you can travel the length of the strip at speeds of up to 50mph, and do not worry about queues as trains arrive ever few minutes. With monorail stops inside a number of the big hotels it is easy to jump on and off as you please. And do not feel lazy, the monorail is a great way to see the strip from above and look down on the millions of tourists who pass along it every year.

The monorail is climate controlled, so if you are suffering from the high desert temper-atures outside it offers you a comfortable journey.

Open from 7am to 2am from Monday to Thursday and 7am to 3am Friday to Sunday, you are guaranteed a safe trip even in the early hours as you make your way back to your hotel room.

So place your bets on Vegas and prepare to have an exciting time as you embrace everything the city has to offer.

Worth the risk? UK goes for broke with supercasinos

A high-stakes expansion is set to sweep the nation. Jonathan Brown reports

An unprecedented expansion in Britain's casino industry is under way, with plans to create a new generation of gambling venues larger than anything seen in this country before. It is estimated that casinos in a dozen towns and cities could generate up to £250m a year in winnings for operators and potentially pave the way for the return of controversial Las Vegas-style super casino complexes, an idea ditched by Gordon Brown in one of his first acts as Prime Minister.

Place your bets: casinos coming your way

Church groups are urging caution over any further rapid growth in Britain's casino base, fearing it could swell the number of problem gamblers and hit poor families. The addiction charity GamCare said that the growing number of gambling outlets underlined the urgent need for education over the risks associated with gaming.

Leighton Vaughan Williams, the director of the Betting Research Unit at Nottingham Business School and an adviser to the government, said the new casinos were always intended as a testbed for future expansion. "We have waited a long time. It has been years since these were chosen and people were starting to forget they had ever been given the go-ahead," he said. "This could be the beginning of something very big. Without this the casino industry would be stuck where it is now."

The new venues are expected to swell the gross win estimate – the amount lost by punters to the house – by 30 per cent, pushing the figure above £1bn a year for the first time.

In December last year the first of eight so-called large casinos created under the 2005 Gambling Act opened its doors, close to the Olympic Park at Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, east London. Next month councillors in Solihul in the West Midlands are expected to give the green light to a £120m gambling complex at the National Exhibition Centre.

Similar schemes are also well under way in Hull, Middlesbrough, Great Yarmouth, Southampton and Milton Keynes, with decisions due in the coming months. Last week Leeds invited applications from operators seeking a licence there.

Large casinos will be able to offer 30 gaming tables for punters to play blackjack and poker as well as 150 fruit machines paying out a maximum jackpot of £4,000.

Another five authorities – Bath and North East Somerset, Luton, Swansea, Wolverhampton and Scarborough – are planning to exercise their right to host "small" casinos. Despite their name these will be bigger than any of the 145 casinos now operating, with the exception of Stratford. They will offer 40 gaming tables and 80 fruit machines paying out top prizes of £4,000.

Some local authorities such as Southampton and Hull see the casinos as central to ambitious regeneration plans. Others see them as a ready source of revenue to promote run-down areas.

Aspers, which runs the casino in Stratford, has agreed to pay Newham Council a minimum of £1m a year from its revenues as well as creating 440 jobs.

But the gaming industry ultimately wants to see restrictions relaxed to allow the market to dictate the number of fruit machines and tables at each venue.

A spokesman for GamCare said there was little evidence to suggest the expansion would lead to more problem gamblers – currently estimated at 0.9 per cent of the population. He said: "Casinos in Britain are well regulated and we will be encouraging and helping any new casino to ensure all staff are expertly trained to spot someone who is potentially in trouble and quickly signpost them to our national helpline and counselling services."

The former Labour government carried out a dramatic about-face over casino expansion. At the height of his ambitions for the industry Tony Blair was said to support the creation of 30 super casinos, each with 1,250 slot machines and unlimited jackpots linked to huge hotel complexes, as well as 100 large and 50 small venues.

But Labour bowed to pressure from backbenchers and church groups and scaled back the plan to just one regional casino which was unexpectedly awarded to Manchester over Blackpool and the Millennium Dome.

Church groups including the Salvation Army and the Quakers have recently stepped up their campaign urging the Government to introduce a compulsory levy on the betting industry to fund research, education and treatment for problem gambling.

Daniel Webster from the Evangelical Alliance said it was important there should be no further liberalisation of the gambling laws until the full impact of the 2005 Act was understood. "We are really concerned that a culture is being created where gambling and losing money is seen as normal," he said.

James North, public issues policy adviser for the Methodist Church in Britain, said: "The figures speak for themselves: problem gambling is on the rise. But the government seems determined to liberalise gambling laws. It is vital that the government understands the challenge posed by this worrying increase in harmful gambling and takes action to reverse it."

VIEW FROM THE SLOTS 'BETTER TO HAVE LARGER CASINOS, FURTHER APART'

It takes a few moments for the eyes and brain to adjust from the light of a late-January afternoon to the flashing lights of 150 slot machines in Aspers casino in the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre, east London. Once they have, the most striking thing about the UK's largest gambling house is that it really isn't that big. Moreover, it doesn't appear to be inhabited by desperate-looking people, pouring the remainder of their souls into a flashing machine which will only ever let them win enough to keep them coming back. Perhaps mercifully for the early afternoon, it doesn't seem to be inhabited by that many people at all.

Syed Naeem Kazmiu, 18, said he had been told by staff that he is one of the youngest they see at the casino. "I have probably dropped around £2,500 in the last two weeks," he said. But, he added, "I play for the fun. I put down money when I can afford it and, when I can't, I don't."

Poppy Smith, 35, from Los Angeles, said: "At home, large casinos bring the surrounding areas down but I don't know if it would be the same here. It is not just about the size of the room, though." Another customer said: "It is probably better to have larger casinos, further apart, than lots in small towns. That way, fewer people have them on their doorsteps and will just fall into them."

Gaming firms 888, Caesars extend licensing deal to US

UPDATE 1-Gaming firms 888, Caesars extend licensing deal to US
Tue Jan 31, 2012

* Says extends UK software licensing agreement to U.S.
* Deal to allow real money services following US regulation

Jan 31 (Reuters) - 888 Holdings Plc said a unit of private equity-owned Caesars Entertainment Corp extended its UK software licensing agreement with the British online gaming company to the United States.

888 said the agreement would see its arm, Dragonfish, power a selection of private poker brands of Caesars, one of the largest casino operators in the United States and owner of the famed Caesars Palace, once online gaming is permitted under the new regulatory regime.

"Utilising 888's state of the art poker platform, the agreement will allow the launch of a real money offering immediately as either Federal or state based regulation is finalised and upon licensing by gaming authorities," 888 said in a statement on Tuesday.

As U.S. states scramble for tax revenue, the potential for legalizing online poker has led casino and gaming companies MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming to unveil a plan to partner with online poker company Bwin.party Digital Entertainment.

Last month, 888 had said it expected core profit for 2011 to be significantly above market expectations, aided by strength in its casino and poker businesses.

888 shares, which have risen 41 percent in the last three months, closed at 47 pence on Monday on the London Stock Exchange, valuing the company at about 165 million pounds.
